How Big IS God?

With the magic of the internet, I’m afraid we’ve also been welcomed into knowing everything that people are thinking. It can be quite shocking at times. I don’t particularly enjoy the current version of social media today but I do enjoy the “people watching” aspect. It is quite fascinating to know what people are thinking or how they view the world, in particular, when it is so different from me and my experiences.

I came across a post one day that had my mind off walking through some deep theological waters. A woman had needed a cup of milk for a recipe and through some small “random” events, she ended up with exactly one cup of milk. She wanted to world to know so she just gratefully posted her thanks to God for taking care of her needs.

But someone else jumped in and mockingly said something like, “oh yeah, there’s children dying in Africa and genocide happening all over the world but God is worried about Patty from Midwest Kansas and her cup of milk!”

Now, I’m sure we have all known people who over spiritualize everything and not everything has to be a spiritual attack or deliverance. Like yes, the devil is against you, but sometimes you get a speeding ticket because you were…….speeding.

But is God in the small things or does He only care about big problems? Are we making everything too spiritual when we thank God for providing for “silly” problems when there are so many greater ones that need His attention?

Well, how big is your God? This sarcastic comment showed me one thing about that person’s understanding of God. For them, He wasn’t very big. They didn’t think it was possible for God to care deeply and be working to end injustice and rescue lives while at the same time, care enough about the Pattys of the world to provide just enough milk.

God’s power and presence are not limited. That’s one of the core truths we hold to about God, His omnipresence. The fact that He can be everywhere all at once. And then, His omnipotence, the absolute unlimited power that He holds over His creation.

He has been working since He found Adam and Eve hiding in the garden, to end evil and restore the creation to what it once was, perfect, peaceful and just. He promised them that He would win by sending a savior to crush the head of the snake. When Jesus came, He did just that. With His death on the cross, He defeated all evil once and for all. He holds all the power. For now, the devil has been allowed to roam the earth for a set time but that time will come to an end.

We can trust Him to one day finally end all injustice and make everything right when He returns and throws the enemy of our souls into the lake of fire. Until that day though, where is He and what is He doing?

We already said that for a time, the devil has been allowed to roam the earth and cause destruction, so for now, evil will continue to exist. But God is still there, walking with His people, carrying them through the battles, giving them the strength and power to keep going. He is restoring and redeeming and healing and using every circumstance to rescue souls from the fires of hell.

One of the greatest parts of the gospel is that this God, who is so great and powerful and is working in this huge world in these grand ways, also sees you.

In Luke 12, we find Jesus speaking with his disciples. He is encouraging them to not be afraid in this world, though there are many dangers and hard things. He tells them that they are worth so much to the Father, that He knows even the number of hairs on our heads. And at least for me, with how much hair I lose, that number is constantly changing.

Later on in the passage, we also hear His encouragement that the Father will always take care of His children, who are worth more than the flowers of the field or the sparrows who always have what they need.

The bigness of the world’s problems has no bearing on God also stepping into the smallness of our lives and meeting our personal needs as well. He is so big that He can do both at the same time. Now that is an Awesome God.
